Why I embarked on my functional medicine journey...

I have faced health challenges throughout my life, but it was in my late 20s that my well-being took a significant downturn. I began experiencing constant joint pains, severe fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, severe digestive issues, hair loss, hormonal imbalances, and many other symptoms. Despite seeing numerous doctors and specialists, none could provide a clear explanation for my illness.

Feeling frustrated and helpless with conventional medicine's inability to address my symptoms, I made the decision to leave my job and train in nutrition. My goal was to deepen my understanding of the intricate relationship between health and diet, hoping to find answers and improve my own well-being.

Over the course of four years, I studied at the renowned Institute for Optimum Nutrition in London. However, this journey was not without its challenges. Balancing the demands of studying, working, and raising two children, all while dealing with my chronic health problems, took a significant toll on me both physically and emotionally.

During this time, my younger son began experiencing his own health issues, which served as a catalyst for my interest in functional medicine. I felt my training in nutrition was not cutting it and it did not help me understand what was truly going on within the body when things go wrong. My child's struggles further motivated me to explore alternative approaches that consider the underlying causes of health problems, rather than merely addressing the symptoms. In addition to that and without my knowing, being exposed to mould in my home exacerbated my health issues, ultimately leading me into the world of mould-related illness.

By delving into functional medicine, I hoped to gain a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of our bodily systems and find long term solutions for both myself and my son.

What I learnt through my journey...

Over the years, I have received several diagnoses, including Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, autoimmunity, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, PCOS, IBS, endometriosis, PMDD, rosacea and anxiety. While these diagnoses might sound overwhelming, I have come to realise that it's more important to focus on understanding the underlying mechanisms that cause the symptoms and dysfunction. Symptoms are clues that the body is struggling and an opportunity for us to take action and make positive changes. This shift in perspective has been truly transformative and life-changing.

So, where do I stand today? As I turn 40, I feel healthier, stronger, and more resilient than ever before. Thanks to my knowledge and understanding of functional medicine, I can say that I have been able to save my own life. While I still experience the odd bad day, they are fewer and farther between and much more manageable than they used to be, and I know what I need to do to minimise my flare ups. I have gained a deep understanding of why these setbacks occur and have the tools to address them. This has empowered me, giving me control over my health.

As a spoonie, the day you are no longer identifying as a chronically ill person is a huge deal!

I don't take good health for granted, and to me, that is what success feels like.

I share my story because I firmly believe that there is always something that can be done to improve someone's health and quality of life, regardless of how complex their conditions may be. With the right approach and support, positive changes are possible.

Functional medicine continues to captivate me as a fascinating field. I am constantly learning and I am so excited about the limitless possibilities it presents for myself, my family, and my clients. My passion for what I do drives me to help others in their quest for better health.
